Cross bike or cancel?

I treat my bikes badly, I neglect them, I don't lavish the mechanical niceness on them that they deserve and today they payed me back for my mistreatment. Had arranged a singlespeed ride with Trio, meeting at 11. I needed a new rear tyre on my singlespeed, me and tyre changing aren't always compatible, I don't have the thumbs for it. Not wanting to leave it until the very last minute I set about changing the tyre at about 8.45. By 10 I was stood in the kitchen, still in my pj's, a bike wheel on the kitchen table with a tyre not quite on, surrounded by a scattering of tyre levers and popped inner tubes. I gave up on the idea, decided I'd go gears and full sus instead, them remembered lack of brake pads for that option. Cross bike or cancel? Cross bike of course. Not ideal given the icy slush everywhere. We stayed low and gentle for my inappropriately biked needs. Lovely cake stop and was good to chat and catch up as it seems ages since I saw Trio. A fun way to spend a couple of hours.

PS Apologies to those that read this and the Minx blog, I'm probably just gonna cut and paste to blog there as well. I haven't blogged for them for a bit, see something else I neglect.

Jez does my bike maintenance, I'm crap. I also don't have the thumbs for tight tyres, last time I changed my road bike tyres there were tantrums, lots of them (and a big oily stain on the lounge rug which is still there and which I deny all knowledge of). All my bikes need cleaning too and have done for a while.

My empathy. I do not know what it means to clean a bike. ;) On the plus side, in a weird way, at least my bike was stolen before my lack of maintenance bit me back. I did wish a broken chainset on the thief, as the whole thing needed replacing due to the beatings I gave it. heh.

I'm not too bad at cleaning them. It's all the little checking and tweaking stuff I tend to gloss over. My thumbs are still wrecked from todays tyre wrangling efforts.
